The paranormal is increasingly big business in the United States and across the world, as can be seen from the amount of cities that have tour companies offering ghost tours around supposedly haunted sites.
The New Orleans Ghost Tour explores the haunted history of the Big Easy, taking in the spooky sites of the French Quarter and the mysterious cemeteries of New Orleans. It starts at Flanagan’s pub on St Philip’s Street. It lasts just under two hours, and the walking distance is less than a mile.
Chicago Supernatural Tours is run by Richard T Crowe, who bills himself as a professional ghost hunter. He says he has dedicated his life to “uncovering Chicago's rich history of hauntings, ghosts and other supernatural phenomena”. The main tour the Nitetime Edition, which is a bus tour around Chicago’s spooky sites, but there is also a special Hallowe’en Special Edition Tour.
Ghost Tours in the United States: Ghost Tours in St Augustine, Florida
America’s oldest city has had more time for ghosts to emerge than any other, so it is no surprise that Ghost Tours of St Augustine runs walking tours and bus tours. More interestingly, they also organise a Ghosts of the Matanzas sailing trip. The boat trip on the bay involves singing as well as ghost stories from a spooky tour guide.
Philadelphia is arguably America’s most historic city, and a lot of famous people have lived there. But are some of them still there? Ghost Tour of Philadelphia takes in all the major sites, investigating whether Benjamin Franklin is still wandering the streets of Philadelphia, the founding fathers haunt Independence Hall and Benedict Arnold’s spectre can be found at Powel House.
Offering a slight difference on the ghost tour theme, San Francisco’s chilling catch is vampires. The Vampire Tour of San Francisco is hosted by Mina Harker, who claims to have been made into a vampiress in London back in 1897, following an encounter with Count Dracula. Her tour takes in toothy tales, mainly historical but with a few tall stories thrown in.
