Nearly 80% of alleged hauntings can be de-bunked. Learn how to determine if your dwelling is haunted and when to call for help.

America has a new infatuation – haunted places. With the uprising of reality TV sweeping our nation, television shows like Ghost Hunters and Paranormal State have peaked the interest of millions of Americans, causing many to question if their own home or business has spirited activity. Below you will learn how to tell if you have an actual haunting, or if those bumps in the night are the normal noises of your own home, sweet home.

There are several things you should check before deciding to call in paranormal professionals. The normal and natural sights and sounds of many homes include creaking floors, knocks from the attic or basement, feelings of being watched, doors closing on their own, the feeling of someone touching your head or hair, and cold spots to name only a few. The list below will help you determine if your home is behaving normally, or if should consider calling in the troops.

  • Creaking Floors – Many wood floors creak naturally when walked on. If your floors are creaking without someone stepping on them, consider that wood contracts and expands with heat and cold. If you run your air conditioning/heating, you can expect to hear these sounds from your wood floors.
  • Attic and Basement Sounds – The same holds true for attic and basement noises. When you hear banging noises, pay attention to your air conditioning/heating units. The duct vents in these areas do move and can bang when the air flow stops and starts. Additionally, pay attention to plumbing pipes. When water is turned on or off, loose pipes cause banging sounds. The water heater is also often the culprit of noises that make the skin crawl.
  • Feelings of Dread – The feeling of doom or that someone is watching you is not so ominous if you know how to use an Electromagnetic Field Detector, which can be purchased at most building supply stores. By determining the normal field readings of the rooms in your home, and then taking a reading of the suspect room, you may be surprised to find that there are exposed electrical wires or cables. By containing the wiring (call an electrical professional for this), you should find that the room becomes much more friendly.
  • Doors – Before jumping off the deep end when you notice a door that closes apparently on its own, check for open windows and exterior doors. Many times the draft and pull from an opening or closing window or door is the culprit. Air conditioning and heating units, which pull air through the home, have also been known to make doors seem to close on their own.
  • Being Touched – Most of the time, the feeling that someone has touched your head or hair is experienced in an older dwelling, attic or basement. Turn on the lights and look around for cobwebs, hanging wiring or loose plaster on the ceiling.
  • Cold Spots – Be sure to check for open or cracked windows or doors. Look around for dryer vents, open chimneys, ceiling ventilation or any other possible opening to the outside of the room.

Once you have performed a check of your own dwelling and have not been able to determine the causes of your concerns, consider bringing in a qualified Paranormal Team to assist you in finding the cause of the experiences. Locating a team is as easy as a click of your mouse. Most paranormal investigating teams do not charge a fee and are eager to help.

Good luck and happy de-bunking.
