Haunted Witch Capital, Salem Massachusetts24 People Had Hysteria in Salem Village, Later Renamed Danvers, MA
Salem Village, like other haunted places, is the site of tragedies and killings. Some of the ghosts are directly tied to the witch persecution; others aren't.
Mass witch hysteria spread in Salem Village, which existed in modern-day Danvers, Massachusetts. Many innocent people were arrested as suspected witches, including a four-year-old girl. Nineteen “convicted witches” were hanged on Gallows Hill and four died in prison. During the Salem Witch Trials, Giles Corey was pressed to death with stones because he refused to recognize the fact that the court had a right to try him, not because he was a witch. His ghost has been seen near the Old Jail. Haunted Salem’s Joshua Ward HouseThe Joshua Ward House was built on the foundation of Sheriff George Corwin’s home. Corwin was hated for his cruelty. He was called “The Strangler” because of his torture methods. He oversaw Corey’s torment and death. A realtor had offices in the building in the 1980s. Employees, clients and others felt suffocating sensations in the building. One room is the most haunted. Its door was locked nightly, but the next morning books and papers were found strewn on the floor, the wastebasket was upside down and lamp shades were awry. When a Polaroid was taken of an employee, the person’s face was replaced by woman’s image, wearing a long gray coat, arms by her sides and having a mass of dark, unruly hair. Salem’s Haunted Baker’s IslandA woman was lost in the isle’s marshes over a century ago. Her white clad specter is sighted late at night, frantically pacing the island’s paths. Naomi Colyer’s ghost is another haunter. She drowned in the harbor. Shortly after the incident, a witness heard clanking sounds and saw a shadow putting Colyer’s unique milk can under the water pump and an unseen hand working its handle. Other paranormal happenings include a jewel thief’s ghost searching for his hidden treasure, sounds of a party’s music and clinking glasses coming from the vacant Chase House and whinnyings of a ghostly horse by the lighthouse where the animal had died. Haunted Salem’s Miller Warf’s HouseCaptain Herbert Miller built the structure from a salvaged barge’s hull in the early 1900s. During the 1980s, the current owner thought about turning the house into a restaurant. People entering the second floor heard a hollow, gruff voice telling them to get out of there. Research revealed that the barge parts used to build the second floor was the Glendower. This ship's captain was axed to death by a crewman. During the killer’s trial, a crewmate testified he heard the captain shout at people to get out around the time the coroner determined the cause of death. Salem’s Haunted Lyceum RestaurantThe eatery was built on the site of executed witch Bridget Bishop's apple orchard. People have felt her presence and smelled apples when none were in the building. Her spirit was reportedly contacted in 2002 by Salem witches Shawn Poirier, Sandra Power and Christian Day using an Ouija Board during the production of a program for a TV show. Technicians filming it were plagued by problems with their equipment. Salem’s Haunted Ship, the Grampus The Grampus is docked across town. Many won’t go aboard and nearby Gloucester’s fishermen have made it known that don’t want her in their harbor. A Coast Guard surf boat was lost in the Blizzard of 1978 while it was going to help a stranded oil tanker in Salem Sound. Captain Quirk, a retired Seebee, and his crew volunteered to go to the rescue. Grampus’’ last message stated the vessel was damaged by a wave and taking on water. The ship capsized. Later, the Shewas salvaged and sold. While making repairs, her new owner heard conversations emanating from the bow when no one else was aboard.
