Ghost hunters come from all over to visit the most haunted town in the south, Monticello. Tales of bumps in the night abound. Here is a small sampling.

Northern Florida is steeped in history. Descendants of the earliest settlers still live on family properties all across the state but especially the northern part of the Sunshine State. It stands to reason that an area with history running that deep would also have tales passed through the generations of things unseen. Stern warnings are given to rambunctious children to be inside before the sun goes down and to never cut through the old cemetery down the road or the dilapidated property at the end of the overgrown lane.

The Big Bend Ghost Trackers of Tallahassee, Florida have investigated many of these old tales and unexplained happenings across the area. A list of their past, present and upcoming investigations can be found on their website.

A few of the ghost stories from North Florida are listed below.

  • The Allison House Inn

Quincy

The Allison House Inn is a Bed and Breakfast housed in an 1843 historical home. This home was originally built for former Governor A.K. Allison. Among the ghosts thought to be in this house are the governor and his daughter, Sarah. The most active areas were found to be The Governors Room, The Garden Room and the hallway outside of these rooms.

  • Brothel House

Apalachicola

In 1872 in the old Bowery area of this small fishing village, the building was used as a Speak Easy and brothel. It has been said; ghosts can be felt and smelled. The feeling of being watched is ever present. Team members from BBGT communicated with three entities while visiting the building believed to be; Rudolph, Vivian and Patricia.

  • Monticello Opera House

Monticello

The Opera House was built in 1890 and is thought to be inhabited by John Henry Perkins. Unidentified odors have been smelled and piano music heard playing in the building by staff and visitors alike. The ghosts seem to be friendly and only looking for a little fun.

  • John Denham Bed & Breakfast

Monticello

John Denham built this home in 1873. Activity outside and inside of the blue room, including the presence of a woman, in the hallway and on the staircase have all been reported. A BBGT member communicated with what was thought to be a Union soldier that either died or is buried some where on the property.

  • Leaf Theater

Quincy

This theater is thought to be haunted by the former projectionist. He can be seen walking around the theater checking his watch incessantly. He is most often found in the projection room.

  • Old Train Depot

Madison

This is another building where BBGT team members investigated stories of odd things happening. They found the depot to be haunted by a former employee. He can be seen walking around carrying a lantern. The team smelled a strong aroma of coffee and heard sounds coming from the bathroom when no one was in the room.

  • Site of 1840 Indian Massacre

Gadsden County

In 1840 five members of the McLane Family, all but the father who had gone to town on business for the day were murdered by Indians. It is thought that the family members are still hanging around their old home-place. They can be felt and orbs have been seen in the woods near their headstones.

Monticello, Florida has the distinction of being the most haunted town in the south. A visit to Monticello should be on every ghost hunter’s to-do list.
