The phenomena, witnessed by many, began the night a boarder died from an illness in Adam Livingston's house after not receiving the last rites. Was he the poltergeist?

Adam Livingston, was a Pennsylvania Deutsch Evangelical Lutheran. He moved from Pennsylvania to what is now West Virginia with his family. He was an honest hardworking farmer and unprepared for experiencing frightening paranormal phenomena.

Source of Wizard Clip Poltergeist?

In 1794, a stranger was a boarder in the Livingston homestead. A few days after his arrival, he became extremely ill. Twice, he told Adam he was Catholic and asked for a priest to give him the last rites and was ignored because Adam was prejudiced against members of that church and wouldn’t allow a priest in his home. Soon, the man died.

Adam hired Jacob Foster to sit with his corpse. As soon as candles were lit in the room, they went out. The same thing happened twice again. Adam brought candles from another room. They were also extinguished for no apparent reason.

On the moonlit night after the stranger’s burial, Adam heard horses galloping around his house. He looked out of the window, but saw nothing. Other inexplicable events, testified to by many witnesses, quickly followed:

  • Barn burned
  • Cattle died
  • Turkeys and chickens were decapitated
  • Crockery flew and broke
  • Money disappeared
  • Burning logs jumped from the fireplace
  • Sounds of shears were heard and items were found cut into shapes of figures or ribbons
  • The voice appeared and told Adam the family should pray for hours to avoid Purgatory. Eventually, they converted to Catholicism.

Priests Expel Wizard Clip Poltergeist

Adam was desperate to get rid of the source. Two Protestant ministers couldn’t help. Three occultists tried spellwork, without success.

Finally, Adam had a dream. He saw a male wearing robes and heard a voice say the man could help. After an arduous search, he found the man, Father Dennis Cahill. The priest sprinkled holy water, but the clipping sounds continued, so he held a mass which apparently got rid of the unwelcome visitor.

For several days the house was quiet, but the poltergeist returned. Bishop of Baltimore John Carroll sent another priest, Father Demetrius Gallitzin, to help. Gallitzin wrote a lengthy account, which has been lost, and letters about the events at Wizard Clip. When he tried to perform an exorcism, the phenomena exacerbated. Cahill was, again, summoned and finally, the poltergeist was expelled.

Who Was the Wizard Clip Poltergeist?

Not much was known about poltergeists in the eighteenth century. People believed they were demons or malevolent ghosts. Poltergeist activity is caused by psychokinesis, PK, the ability of the mind to affect matter.

There are two types of poltergeists, human, HAP, and entity, EAP, agents. HAPs have a psychological profile and suffer from unpleasant emotions, triggering subconscious PK. Activity only happens when they’re present.

The PK appears to be conscious with EAPs because they exhibit intelligence, have a purpose and create phenomena beyond a human’s physical capabilities. It’s extremely rare for an EAP to speak, so the voice probably was another paranormal phenomenon. It’s most likely it was an EAP, the stranger who died without extreme unction, that caused the phenomena. According to accounts, Adam averred he didn’t know his name and couldn’t find it when he looked through the deceased belongings. It appears odd that Adam would allow someone to stay in his home with his family and not know who the man was. The boarder’s grave is marked “Unknown Stranger,” which makes one wonder….
